Glass Plates

Some years ago my wife Karen started collecting glass plate negatives, finding them in junk shops and latterly in auctions. A handful grew into around a thousand or so which I am gradually scanning, gently restoring when needed and adding to the collection. This is obviously a time consuming process so I expect to be working on this for a very long time.

Many of the plates are from press archives and are in a poor state, probably from being processed in a rush and perhaps not being fully washed so the images could be rushed to print and so make a deadline. Some have extended captions which have been taken from the original typewritten notes that accompany the plates and provide a fascinating window to the past.

If you wish to you use one or more of these images I would carry out a sympathetic restoration before distribution.

A visit to the WATS

The plate is annotated 'A visit to the WATS 1939' which I think refers to The Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), which was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War, formed on 9 September 1938 and existing until 1 February 1949 when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps.

Royal Princes and Princesses trained to earn their own living

From their earliest years the children on Prince Harald, brother of the King of Denmark, have received a practical education. Each Prince and Princess, according to their natural bent, has been trained to earn their own living and apprenticed to a trade or profession. They mingle in the normal life of the city of Copenhagen, and go to work the same as the children of ordinary working parents. One Princess has been apprenticed to a firm of photographers, and carries out the ordinary dark room work; another is apprenticed to a book binding firm; and yet another, who is a skilled artist, designs embroidery. The young Princes have been taught carpentry and woodworking. Photo shows: Princess Alexandrine Loise, aged 15, binding books. (Planet News) 16337.
